Sunderland lost Sunday’s League One playoff final to Charlton Athletic.
Sunderland have missed out on promotion back to the Championship, losing 2-1 to Charlton Athletic in the League One playoff final on Sunday afternoon.
The Black Cats had missed out on automatic promotion with some patchy end of season form, but managed to battle past Portsmouth in the semi-finals of the League One playoffs.
With two clean sheets in those games, Sunderland fans were hoping to produce a similar display against Charlton, and they actually made a perfect start in bizarre circumstances.
Naby Sarr’s early back pass evaded Dillon Phillips for a ridiculous own goal, and whilst that gave Sunderland the advantage they wanted, they didn’t press on and find the second.
That allowed Charlton back into the game, with Lyle Taylor’s cross being tapped home by Ben Purrington, making it 1-1 before the break.
Charlton then won it with virtually the last kick of the game, as Patrick Bauer’s first effort was blocked, before he turned the rebound home and sparked wild scenes at Wembley.
Sunderland were left heartbroken, and must now face up to another season in League One, which loanee Lewis Morgan may or may not be a part of.
The Celtic man will be heading back to Parkhead soon, and it’s fair to say that Sunderland fans weren’t impressed with his display against Charlton, blasting him for being out of his depth and being ‘useless’, with some celebrating that it was his final game for the club.
Even Celtic fans joined in criticising Morgan’s display, believing he’s ‘way, way off’ the level Celtic need, even predicting that he could be one of the first players out of the door this summer having failed to show he’s of Bhoys standard.
