Sunderland’s hopes of automatic promotion took a crushing blow on Monday afternoon, as they could only draw against Peterborough United.
The Black Cats were in a great position having beaten Doncaster Rovers on Friday night, and were looking for another victory on Monday to keep the pressure on second-placed Barnsley.
Jack Ross saw his side struggle to break down the Posh, but Sunderland snatched what appeared to be a late winner as Max Power popped up with an 87th minute goal.
However, Sunderland couldn’t hold on, as Peterborough striker Matt Godden scored a 91st minute equaliser, meaning Ross and co went home with one point instead of three.
Rather than being two points behind Barnsley, Sunderland are now four points adrift of an automatic promotion spot, and with just three games to go, it looks like the Black Cats will need a last-gasp boost to avoid the playoffs.
A number of players didn’t quite hit the heights expected of them in yesterday’s draw, and midfielder George Honeyman took something of a battering on Twitter for his performance.
The homegrown playmaker, who is Sunderland captain this season, struggled to impose himself on the game before being substituted in favour of Will Grigg in the second half.
Fans took to Twitter to suggest that Honeyman was ‘horrific’ and ‘looked clueless’, with many feeling that he simply doesn’t do enough and shouldn’t be captain, with absolutely no mercy given despite him being a youth product at the Stadium of Light.
