Sunderland’s clash with West Ham this weekend has taken on added significance, reports the Sunderland Echo.
The Black Cats are without a win at the beginning of this campaign, having failed to pick up three points in all of their games under new manager David Moyes so far.
It leaves them rooted to the bottom of the table with just a point to their name and four points from safety already.

This weekend sees them take on fellow strugglers West Ham, who despite sitting 15th have only won two games all season themselves.
While the game is a perfect time for them to finally pick their first win, the Sunderland Echo reports that the game has taken on added significance.
According to the newspaper, the Black Cats must avoid a defeat to Slaven Bilic’s side to avoid registering the worst start to a season this century.

Not since Sheffield Wednesday in 1999 have a team picked up two points or less in their opening nine games.
To put it into context even Aston Villa’s team last season, arguably one of the worst in memory, registered four points from nine games.
Of course, this is familiar territory for Sunderland and even if they suffer defeat this weekend, there will not be many predicting relegation just yet.
