Sunderland now feel they will at least get some money in the bank even if they lose forward Joel Asoro.
Sunderland still have control over the future of young talent Joel Asoro amid reported interest from Premier League duo Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves.
Asoro, 19, was a rare bright spark for the Black Cats during the dismal 2017-18 season that saw them suffer relegation to the third tier of English football. The Swede, who arrived on Wearside as a 16-year-old in 2015, scored three and assisted another two in 11 Championship starts and could be one of the players who actually benefits from the club dropping into the third tier of English football, where he can continue to make serious inroads to the starting XI.
That is if Sunderland can keep hold of him, however. According to a report from the Daily Star Sunday (13/05; page 49), Wolves are considering a move for the Sunderland with Tottenham also amongst the list of clubs to have watched the youngster.
Asoro has just one year remaining on his current deal, seemingly throwing his long-term future into further doubt, but Sunderland can comfort themselves with the fact they will not lose one of their prized youngsters for nothing.
Clubs are obliged to pay a compensation fee for any player under the age of 24 who leaves his club at the end of their contract, providing the player in question was already offered a new contract by their former employers, the Chronicle report.
Former manager Chris Coleman confirmed in April the club have offered Asoro a new deal and according to the Chronicle, the club will reopen those talks now that Stewart Donald has completed his takeover of the club.
