Everton are due to take on Sunderland in the Carabao Cup this evening.

Sunderland boss Simon Grayson has told the Chronicle that he hopes Everton do not start with Jordan Pickford in goal in the Carabao Cup this evening.

Sunderland are set to travel to Goodison Park, where they will be looking to pull off an upset against Premier League opposition.

And Grayson feels that his side’s chances will be increased, if Everton do rest Pickford for the contest.

“He is a great kid, fantastic shot saver, good ability, good distribution,” Grayson said.

“I always felt he would be a Premier League player and an England No.1 of the future. He is only going to improve and let’s hope he is not playing against us on Wednesday.”

Sunderland know all about Pickford’s talents, as he developed through their youth academy before moving to Everton.

If Pickford is rested, then Maarten Stekelenburg looks like his most likely replacement in Everton’s goal.

The League Cup could provide some much needed respite for both Sunderland and Everton, after their poor starts in the league.

Everton and Sunderland have won just two league matches between them, and will be under pressure to put in a positive performance this evening.
