Sunderland midfielder Didier Ndong has recently been linked with a move away from the Stadium of Light.

Simon Grayson has admitted to the Sunderland Echo that he didn’t realise how good Didier Ndong was before moving to the Stadium of Light.

Ndong signed for Sunderland last term, and was one of their better performers, as they badly underperformed in the Premier League and slipped to relegation.

Although the 23-year-old did put in some poor displays, he also showed signs of quality.

And Ndong has played a key role for Sunderland so far this season in Grayson’s midfield.

The former Lorient man is now being linked with a move away from the Stadium of Light, but Grayson’s comments suggest that he wants Ndong to stay with Sunderland.

“I knew a little bit about him but when you are working with players closely you see them in a different light,” Grayson said.

“He has unbelievable athleticism and work rate, and good quality on the ball too.

“That is why he was a £13.6million player. He is still young and adapting to the British way of football, it is never easy when you are in a team that is finding it difficult in the Premier League but he looks like he is enjoying himself and is doing what I am asking him to do. Long may that continue.”

Ndong’s performances have helped Sunderland go unbeaten over the campaign so far.

There were fears that the Black Cats could struggle in the Championship, but they have been in impressive form so far.

Sunderland take on Leeds United this weekend, in their next competitive action.
