The Black Cats fan favourite scored a sublime chip at the Stadium of Light yesterday.
Sunderland manager Jack Ross has given his verdict on Luke O’Nien’s stunning goal in the Black Cats’ 2-1 win over MK Dons in League One on Saturday, admitting the full-back / midfielder has an “unbelievably good” finish considering he’s not a striker (Sunderland Echo).
The 24-year-old had several attempts to double Sunderland’s advantage as one header hit the post, while the other one was thwarted by MK keeper Lee Nicholls, but in the end it was a case of third time lucky and saving the best for last.
In the 28th minute, O’Nien got behind the opposition defence and, bearing down on goal with the goalkeeper edging forward to restrict his angle, he went above him with a delightful lob, the effort coming off the woodwork and going over the line for his first of the season (Transfermarkt).
Sunderland did go on to concede a poor goal in the second half when Jordan Bowery bundled home for MK Dons, but they saw the game out and, after 10 league fixtures, they now sit fifth in the table, not to mention the result being the perfect end to a good week in which they took another Premier League scalp in the League Cup.
“I always think Luke might create a goal or score from playing in that position because he’s got that ability to find himself in the right place,” Ross told the Sunderland Echo.
“He’s actually an unbelievably good finisher for a guy that’s not a striker. He works really hard at it and his dedication to it and improvement in the past year as a football has been huge. It’s a testament to his hard work and hopefully the help we’ve given him.”
Up next for Sunderland is the League One clash with Lincoln City at Sincil Bank next Saturday.
