Sunderland boss Jack Ross to give Anton Forrester another chance

Forrester remains a free agent, but played for Sunderland against Darlington on Tuesday.

Sunderland manager Jack Ross told the Shields Gazette he is to give free agent Anton Forrester another chance to earn a contract with the Wearside club on Saturday, after failing to make an impact on Tuesday.

Ross’ first game in charge of the Black Cats ended in huge disappointment as they suffered an embarrassing 1-0 loss to sixth-tier outfit Darlington, despite fielding a side full of first-team players.

Forrester, 24, played the first hour of the match but could not help Sunderland in slipping to a dismal 1-0 defeat, but he is set to be given another chance to earn a new deal.

Former St. Mirren manager Ross told the Shields Gazette that Forrester will get a second chance as Sunderland face Hartlepool United on Saturday afternoon.

“Anton came in and joined yesterday,” Ross said. “He started out at Everton and has most recent been at Port Vale where had some injury issues.

“We’ll have a look at him again on Saturday. We’re light on numbers in those areas, so it would be remiss of me not to have a look.”

Former Everton striker Forrester is a free agent after his contract at Port Vale expired at the end of the 2018-19 season, with the forward managing just 17 appearances for Vale last term – in which he scored three goals.

He will be hoping to find the back of the net on Saturday in order to tempt Ross into handing the striker a Sunderland contract, as the Black Cats prepare for life in League One.
