Sunderland boss Jack Ross took Adam Matthews out of his side’s starting line-up at the weekend.

Matthews started the campaign in Sunderland’s starting line-up, but with Tom Flanagan now fully fit, he was removed from the starting line-up at the weekend.
Sunderland went on to win 4-1 against Rochdale, with Flanagan impressing.
And Ross has suggested that Flanagan has become his first choice now, following his recovery from injury.
“He’s somebody that was unfortunate to pick up the injury so late in pre-season,” Ross said.
“I had a chat with Adam about making the decision, and he understood it. Again, Adam is somebody who should be in my reckoning every week with the pedigree he has and the quality he’s got.

“Tom’s work pre-season meant he was always going to be very much considered for selection as soon as he got fully fit.”
Flanagan only arrived at Sunderland from Burton Albion in the summer, and he has more experience of playing in League One.
The Black Cats’ win over Rochdale was arguably their most impressive of the season, as they picked up a comfortable three points.
Sunderland are continuing to remain among the front runners in the League One table, and are currently in third place.
Sunderland are next in action at the weekend, when they take on Coventry City.
