Sunderland boss Jack Ross wants to bring in a left-back in the coming days.
Hume has been Sunderland’s first choice left-back this term, and appears to be growing into the role.
Hume made a shaky start but has looked much improved in recent weeks, with Sunderland still unbeaten in League One action this term.
And Ross insists that if Sunderland do make the signing of a left-back, as expected, then he will not immediately go into the Black Cats’ starting line-up.
“We’re confident we will get a left-back before the window closes,” Ross admitted.
“I always keep pointing out it’s not a slight on Denver [Hume] though, because he’s been really good over the last couple of games.
“At the moment he’s in possession of that jersey and that will remain the case, but we very obviously need depth in that position.
“We have a very healthy balance throughout our squad which allows us to have competition and options pretty much all over the pitch.”
Sunderland have just two days left to secure the signing of the left-back that Ross wants, which means they face a race against time to get the deal over the line.
The Black Cats have been linked with Greg Taylor by BBC Sport, but their first bid was knocked by Kilmarnock.
Whether Sunderland will now make an increased offer for the Scot remains to be seen.
