Sunderland midfielder Elliot Embleton is yet to feature at the Stadium of Light this season.

Sunderland manager Jack Ross takes questions during a press conference at The Stadium of Light on August 2, 2018 in Sunderland, England.

Jack Ross has admitted to the Chronicle that Sunderland midfielder Ellito Embleton needs to change his mind.

Embleton is yet to feature this season, after spending the summer away from England’s under-19’s at the European Championships.

The midfielder is set to return to Sunderland’s line-up tonight, in their Carabao Cup match against Sheffield Wednesday.

And Ross admits that Embleton is playing for his place, as he is behind a number of other options right now.

The Scottish boss said: “I’ve had a couple of good conversations with Elliot, and I think he understands how strong we are in midfield.

“But things can change quickly in that respect. He’ll hopefully be involved on Thursday and hopefully it gives him a platform. Sometimes, players can change your mind very quickly. I think he’s a good player, it’s just that we’ve got a number of good players in that area of the pitch at the moment.”

Sunderland have made a bright start to their League One campaign, so Embleton needs to perform to force his way into the team.

Ross’s side beat Charlton Athletic on opening day, before drawing with Luton Town in their most recent match.

Taking on Sheffield Wednesday this evening may be Sunderland’s toughest test yet though, as they are up against Championship opposition.

If Embleton does impress, he will hope to feature for Sunderland against Scunthorpe United at the weekend.
