Sunderland boss Jack Ross has told the Sunderland Echo that he has not changed his mind at all about Duncan Watmore’s recovery process.

Watmore is being very carefully managed, as Sunderland aim to ease him back from injury.

The attacker has been out for over a year, but is gradually being brought back into Sunderland’s first-team now.

And Ross has suggested that he still has not changed his mind about the best course of action for Watmore.

“It’s a question of how we use him during this busy period, and whether we use him in all the games because we’ve got to look at how his body is after each game but we’ve done that so far and the great thing now is he trusts what I’ve said to him,” Ross said.

“We’ve never changed our mind with him because he did well during the week and I thought on Saturday he did well, which is great for him psychologically.”

Watmore has been utilised as a striker in his most recent Sunderland appearances, but he is more comfortable out wide.

Watmore has now made four appearances in all competitions, and could feature again for the Black Cats at the weekend.

Sunderland are set to take on top of the table Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Saturday.

When Watmore does return to full fitness he is expected to boost Sunderland’s promotion chances considerably, as he could be a destructive influence at League One level.
