Sunderland manager Jack Ross has told The Chronicle that former Newcastle United defender David Edgar will be on trial at the club next week.

Edgar, who started his professional club football career at Sunderland’s bitter rivals Newcastle, is a free agent at the moment following his departure from Ottawa Fury.

The 31-year-old Canada international defender has extensive experience of playing in England, having featured for Newcastle, Burnley, Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town and Sheffield United.

Ross told The Chronicle about Edgar: “I think we’re going to have a look at him next week. It’s a bit challenging at the moment because of the schedule and that’s why I was a bit reticent to commit last week.

“We are not training an awful lot at the moment just because of the number of games. We need to do it next week, because if we wait for a clear week there are not too many of those about!”

Good signing for Sunderland?

Edgar is a very experienced defender who is still only 31 years of age, and the Canada international would be good short-term signing for Sunderland, especially on a free transfer.

The Black Cats could do with another defender for the rest of the season, as Ross’s team aim to win automatic promotion from League One to the Championship at the end of the 2018-19 campaign.

Sunderland are third in the League One table at the moment with 40 points from 19 matches, seven points behind leaders Portsmouth, who have played 20 games.
