Sunderland manager Jack Ross has suggested that George Honeyman’s situation at Sunderland is similar to Jordan Henderson’s when the Liverpool star was at the Stadium of Light, as quoted in The Sunderland Echo.

Henderson came through the Sunderland youth academy and was impressive during his time at the first team.

The 28-year-old midfielder – who earns £100,000 per week as salary, according to Spotrac.com – joined Liverpool from Sunderland in the summer of 2011.

Honeyman has also come through the youth ranks at Sunderland and is now a regular first-team player.

The 24-year-old midfielder is also the Sunderland captain, but some fans have criticised his performances on some occasions this season, as reported on HITC Sport here and here.

Sunderland manager Ross, though, has praised Honeyman and has compared his current situation to that of Henderson at the Stadium of Light.

The Sunderland Echo quotes Ross as saying: “From taking on the captaincy and that responsibility, you become a figurehead and naturally one that becomes more likely to be criticised.

“You speak to people around the club and they speak to me about Jordan Henderson, when he was at the club as a player and got some criticism for his performances and yet now he is probably perceived in a totally different way given his success with Liverpool and England.

“George knows how supportive I am in terms of his role but equally he is no different to any other player and needs to perform to a certain level to stay in the team but he has done well for me.”
