Sunderland manager Jack Ross has told The Sunderland Echo that West Bromwich Albion’s reported January transfer target Bryan Oviedo has not given him any problem.

According to The Sunderland Echo, West Brom in the Championship were interested in signing Oviedo from League One outfit Sunderland on January transfer deadline day.

The deal, though, fell through, according to the report, and the 28-year-old left-back will stay at the Stadium of Light until the end of the season at least.

Sunderland boss Ross has said that the Costa Rica international, who can also operate as a left-sided midfielder, has not given him any problem since his move to West Brom fell through.

Ross told The Sunderland Echo about Oviedo: “I spoke to him on Friday. We gave him the option of a day off because he was late home on Thursday night but he came back in and he was fine.

“He’s not caused me one bit of problem since he’s been here, it’s just been a peculiar set of circumstances we found ourselves in and that was just exacerbated by the circumstances we found ourselves in on Thursday.”

Encouraging for Sunderland

One suspects that Oviedo will be disappointed that the move to West Brom did not happen, but it is encouraging for Sunderland that the former Everton left-back is not having any issues.

True, the left-back could struggle to play regularly for the Black Cats in the coming weeks and months, but he will be an asset on the substitutes’ bench and could even play an important contribution.
