Sunderland manager Jack Ross has suggested to Chronicle Live why fans get frustrated with Aiden McGeady.

Ross believes that it is due to the high expectations from the fans from former Everton winger McGeady that there is frustration when the 32-year-old does not perform well.

The Sunderland boss made the comments following his side’s 1-0 win against AFC Wimbledon at the Stadium of Light in League One at the weekend.

The Black Cats did not perform exceptionally well, and it was McGeady who scored what was the only goal midway through the second half.

Ross told Chronicle Live about McGeady: “The problem is the expectancy is that he will do it every single time. When the ball goes to him you just think he will produce that bit of quality.

“And when he doesn’t and gets the ball taken off him, there is almost this cry of frustration from the fans because the expectation is so high of him.

“But when we can get him up against someone, the majority of the time he will produce something because he is that good.”

Important player

McGeady has not always been at his best during his time at Sunderland so far, but the winger is certainly one of the best and most experienced players in the current Black Cats’ squad.

With Sunderland aiming for automatic promotion to the Championship at the end of the season, the winger will play an important role.

McGeady has been on the books of Sunderland since the summer of 2017 when he joined from Everton for a transfer fee reported by Sky Sports to be worth £250,000.
