Newcastle United have achieved promotion from the Championship… as Sunderland will be attempting next season.
David Moyes has admitted to the Daily Mirror that Sunderland will need to try and emulate Newcastle United, as they look to get back in to the Premier League.
Sunderland suffered a damaging relegation this term, and do not want to spend much time in the second tier.
And Moyes admits that Newcastle’s model, which has been so successful this season, is something which Sunderland need to try and copy.
“There are obviously teams not too far from here we can look to see what happens to get back and you can also look at other ways teams have done it,” he said. “I’ve tried to put a few scenarios to him how it can be done.
“I wouldn’t necessarily want it in writing. Normally when I shake somebody’s hand I trust them and when I speak to them I trust them, that’s the way I work. I don’t need it written on paper, I just need to shake their hand.”
Newcastle’s strategy following relegation was to cash in on some of their higher profile players, and keep the bulk of their squad together.
Newcastle also added well in the summer transfer window, with experienced Championship players coming in.
Whether Sunderland will be able to deploy a employ a similar method remains to be seen.
Sunderland are expected to lose the likes of Jermain Defoe and Jordan Pickford this summer.
And the Black Cats appear to need a lot more renovations to their squad than Newcastle did when they went down, if they are to get back in the top flight.
