Chris Coleman, manager of Sunderland looks on ahead of the Sky Bet Championship match between Queens Park Rangers and Sunderland at Loftus Road on March 10, 2018 in London, England.

Sunderland manager Chris Coleman has admitted to ChronicleLive that he does not know why Chelsea-owned Jake Clarke-Salter did not play well against Preston North End at the weekend.

The Black Cats suffered a 2-0 defeat to Preston at the Stadium of Light in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.

Clarke-Salter started the match and was sent off on the hour mark for picking up two yellow cards.

Sunderland boss Coleman has admitted that he does not know why the 20-year-old defender, who joined the Black Cats on loan from Premier League club Chelsea in the January transfer window, played the way he did against Preston.

Coleman told ChronicleLive about Clarke-Salter: “It was inexperience. He’s been rock solid.

“On Saturday he wasn’t, he was a little bit shaky and I don’t know if that was again because he’s young or if it was the pressure but he looked a bit short, certainly at the start of the second half.”

Going down

Sunderland look set to get relegated from the Championship to League One at the end of the season.

The Black Cats have struggled throughout the campaign, and it is only a matter of time before Coleman’s side’s fate is sealed.

While some could argue that Sunderland could still make a late rally, given their recent results and performances, it is hard to see the players step up in the final weeks of the campaign.
