Sunderland have kept two clean sheets in their last two matches, with Robbin Ruiter in net.
Robbin Ruiter has been favoured to Steele at Sunderland, since Coleman took charge, with the Dutchman now established as the Black Cats’ number one.
Steele is yet to feature at all since Coelman took charge at the Stadium of Light.
But the Welsh boss has been impressed by the way that Steele has responded to being dropped.
Coleman said: “He has done well, has Robbin.
“But Steeley has done well too in training. I have been watching him as well. His attitude has been first-class, brilliant.
“He hasn’t moaned or complained once, he has just worked hard every day and he is ready.
“Robbin knows there are no automatic choices here at Sunderland.
“Every position is up for grabs. Robbin knows that. Steeley is a good boy – I like his character and he has worked his socks off.”
Ruiter looks likely to continue in net for Sunderland for the foreseeable future, as the Black Cats’ defence has tightened in recent weeks.
Ruiter has kept back to back clean-sheets, as Sunderland’s form has improved.
The Black Cats first shut out top of the league Wolverhampton Wanderers, before stopping Fulham from scoring in a 1-0 victory last weekend.
Sunderland are now out of the relegation zone, with their next fixture coming against bottom of the table Birmingham City.
