Sunderland boss Chris Coleman delivers his verdict on Stadium of Light atmosphere since he took charge

Sunderland managed to come from behind yesterday to claim a point against Middlesbrough.

Chris Coleman has told the Gazette that he is desperate to get the Stadium of Light rocking, as the atmosphere at Sunderland’s home ground has already impressed him.

Sunderland’s attendances have dwindled this season, due to their persistent failure to pick up victories.

The Black Cats have won just one match in over a year in front of their own supporters, and fans have started to stay away.

Coleman still feels that Sunderland supporters have created an impressive noise, when given something to cheer about though.

And the Welsh boss is determined to pack the Stadium of Light out again, as he feels the atmosphere could be really intimidating.

“This stadium has been half full since I’ve been here and when we can get the fans excited it’s the best noise I’ve heard, and I’ve been in football a long time,” he said.

“I can’t imagine if it’s full, I can’t imagine if we’re playing well week-in, week-out and going in the right direction. I can’t imagine (what the) atmosphere would be like.

“We’ve had a lot of slaps in the face,some poor performances, booed off and we’ve deserved it. We want to give the fans something to smile about, some hope.”

Sunderland supporters definitely helped drive their team on yesterday, as they collected a point against Middlesbrough.

The Black Cats managed to score a last minute equaliser through Callum McManaman, in a 3-3 draw against Tony Pulis’ side.

The point still leaves Sunderland at the bottom of the Championship table, but keeps them within four points of safety.
