Sunderland boss Chris Coleman has been tasked with helping the Black Cats move away from danger in the Championship.

Wales' manager Chris Coleman follows the game from the touchline during the FIFA World Cup 2018 qualification football match between Georgia and Wales in Tbilisi on October 6, 2017.

Chris Coleman has admitted to the Daily Mail that he will not have masses of funds to spend at Sunderland in the January transfer window.

Coleman has been handed the task of getting Sunderland out of trouble, with the Black Cats currently sitting at the bottom of the Championship table.

Sunderland have endured a disastrous campaign to date, and still have just one league victory to their name.

But Coleman will not be able to spend his way out of trouble, by his own admission.

He said: “Look, the challenges are here and I’m under no illusions. I have not been handed a huge transfer kitty and won’t be able to splash the cash. I knew that before I walked in the door.”

Sunderland could do with an injection of quality in the new year, but it seems that Coleman will have to shop around for bargains and loans.

Sunderland simply cannot afford for Coleman to get things wrong during his time at the Stadium of Light, as things have reached crisis point now.

The Black Cats’ failure to beat Millwall at home, means that they have now not won a league match in front of their own supporters for 20 matches.

Coleman will take charge of his first Sunderland game this evening, when his new side take on Aston Villa at Villa Park.
