Donald Love has played four League One matches for Sunderland so far this season.
Love picked up an injury problem a fortnight ago, and has not been seen in a Sunderland squad since.
The full-back is almost back in training though, and Fowler believes that it could be just a matter of a week before Love is training again.
He said: “He’s on his way back.
“He took a knock a couple of weeks ago but we’ll hopefully see him back on the grass this week or next week.”
Love faces a fight to win a place in Sunderland’s first-team, even when he is back fit.
The youngster started the campaign in Jack Ross’ plans, but has fallen out of favour in recent months.
Love has just four League One appearances to his name, and Sunderland have been in excellent form in his absence.
The Black Cats have won eight matches in a row, and are enjoying their best run of form for years.
Sunderland are now up to second in the League One table, with their next match coming against Wycombe Wanderers at the weekend.
