According to a report on page 53 of The Sun’s printed edition on 31st January, Sunderland attempted to sign Jordan Rhodes from Sheffield Wednesday on deadline day.

Sunderland were looking for a loan forward to increase their attacking threat, and felt Rhodes could have been a good option.

The target-man is said to be unhappy at Wednesday, and the Black Cats felt that they may have a chance to bring him in.

However, Sunderland’s attempt failed and that must be seen as a blow.

Sunderland may have been ambitious in targeting Rhodes, but if they could have got a deal over the line, he could have turned their season around.

Rhodes’ form at Wednesday may not have been spectacular, but he almost guarantees goals at Championship level.

Sunderland have lacked a finisher since Lewis Grabban departed, and the 27-year-old would certainly have filled that role.

The Black Cats ended up signing Ashley Fletcher on loan from Middlesbrough, and while the youngster should improve Chris Coleman’s options, he is not in the same class as Rhodes.

The Wednesday man really would have transformed Sunderland’s attack, and could have been the man to fire them to safety.

But the Black Cats’ failure to get a deal done, means that they are likely to be battling right down to the wire in their bid to survive in the Championship.
