Sunderland were beaten at the Stadium of Light by the Foxes U21s on Tuesday night.
Following their win over Sunderland in Tuesday’s EFL Trophy win at the Stadium of Light, Leicester City development coach Steve Beaglehole accused some of the Black Cats players of “kidology” ahead of the Foxes taking a penalty which would have levelled the scores (official club website).
Sunderland began brightly against the Leicester U21s at the Stadium of Light as Chris Maguire rifled home in a free kick in the first half to give the Black Cats a 1-0 lead, but early in the second half, Callum Wright was brought down for a Foxes penalty.
George Hirst stepped up and slotted his spot-kick into the bottom corner to restore parity, before Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall fired in from the edge of the area on 54 minutes to eventually condemn the hosts to defeat.
“I thought it showed great maturity from Hirsty, there was a lot of kidology going on,” Beaglehole told the official LCFC website. “They delayed him, he had to move the ball and then coolly slotted it away.”
Going into more detail about the threat they had to deal with against Sunderland, he added: I think they had the full side out, the strongest side, Grigg’s came on and the captain (Grant Leadbitter). So, they were tooled up all the way through with options on the bench to keep it strong or even stronger.
“We were very resilient, and it was one of those performances you feel really proud about. It’s a great result for our club again, following on from the great results the first team are having.”
Having beaten Grimsby and secured an additional point after a penalty shootout win over Scunthorpe following a draw, Leicester finish on eight points in the group, while Sunderland and Scunthorpe will play each other for the second qualifying spot.
