Tottenham Hotspur failed to strengthen their squad this summer.
Tottenham fans were left in disbelief at 5pm last night, as the transfer window closed, and their club had failed to sign a single player – the first time that has happened since the summer transfer window was introduced in 2003.
Spurs finished in third position in the Premier League table last season, and thrilled fans up and down the country with their exciting brand of expansive, high-octane football.
They did, however, finish a full 23 points adrift of Pep Guardiola’s magnificent Manchester City side, so having failed to spend a penny this summer, where does that leave them?
Mauricio Pochettino still has a solid group of players to call upon, and it could be argued that by keeping the likes of Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld, this summer has still been somewhat of a success.
There will only be so many seasons where Pochettino can, or will, accept the board’s failure to back him in the market, however, and the lure of a club like Real Madrid might just become too hard to turn down.
The Argentine obviously wanted to sign Jack Grealish – a move that failed to materialise, and another talented attacker would have been very welcome at Tottenham.
Instead, Poch will have to make do with what he already has, and only time will tell if that will be good enough this season.
