Tim Sherwood hailed Michael Edwards on Premier League Productions for the ‘top draw’ business he has conducted over the years at Liverpool.

The former Premier League winner singled out Diogo Jota as ‘such a good signing’ and thinks he is a player who has been scouted to the nth degree.

In the summer, Liverpool paid Wolves £41 million for the services of Jota [BBC Sport], and whilst some raised eyebrows, they will certainly admit that they have been proven wrong now given the start that he has had to life on Merseyside.

Sherwood touched upon Jota’s signing and the work Edwards is doing behind the scenes at Anfield.

“The same with the forward players,” said Sherwood. “Are they flexible? Can they rotate off the sides? Out to in. All of them can do that. That’s why Jota was such a good signing.

“Did anybody think he would be as good as he has actually been? When you go in. When you are top draw. When you are a good scout like Michael Edwards.

“You get your foot soldiers out to go and watch these boys. It’s not just act on a whim and say ‘yes, let’s go and get him, he is available’. It’s not a scattergun approach which you see at a lot of other top clubs.

“It’s identifying the targets. Watching them for a long period. Doing your due diligence and going ‘yes, that’s the right price bring him into the football club because he can make the difference’ and that’s what they do. Their recruitment is top draw.”

Liverpool’s trophies under Jurgen Klopp

  1. Champions League

    2018/19

  2. UEFA Super Cup

    2019

  3. FIFA Club World Cup

    2019

  4. Premier League

    2019/20

When Jota first stepped foot into Melwood, he would have faced the daunting task of trying to match or even dethrone the Liverpool trio – Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah – already in front of him.

Whilst others struggle, and continue to struggle, he has taken it head-on and has smashed nine goals in 14 Premier League and Champions League matches, which is some going.

It’s another sign that those in the boardroom have picked another player that has the mindset of competing at Liverpool’s level and even taking it one better themselves.
