VfB Stuttgart are reportedly desperate to sell Borna Sosa in the January transfer window, with Manchester City and Tottenham previously being linked with the Croatian international.

According to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, the Bundesliga side have to sell the 24-year-old fullback due to their financial situation, with Stuttgart hopeful of getting as much as €25m (£22m) for Sosa depending on the defender’s performances for Croatia at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Bild had reported in the summer that Sosa was on City’s radar as a potential replacement for Oleksandr Zinchenko, whilst according to the same publication, Tottenham are also interested in the Bundesliga star, with the north London side arguably the side most likely to move for the defender in January.

Likened to England legend David Beckham as per Stuttgart’s sporting director Sven Mislintat, Sosa is regarded by many as one of the best fullbacks in the Germany top-flight, yet with City signing Sergio Gomez in the summer, the Premier League giants moving for the Croat feels unlikely, hence Tottenham’s potential lead in the race.

Whilst Antonio Conte has options at left-wingback, the Italian manager is yet to settle on a first-choice option for the position. And with Stuttgart desperate to sell Sosa in January, the north London side would be wise to move for the 24-year-old in the new year.

With Stuttgart in financial distress, Sosa being put up for sale is quite a move from the Bundesliga side given how important the defender is to the German club. Yet for Tottenham, there is now an opportunity in the market to sign a top fullback who could meet Conte’s high demands for a player in the position.

Indeed, Sosa has all the qualities needed to work in Conte’s 3-5-2 system, and with Stuttgart in a position where they have to offload the defender, Tottenham could land themselves a potential bargain if they put themselves in the lead to sign the fullback early enough.
