Graham Roberts has claimed that the ‘stupidity’ of Tottenham Hotspur defender Serge Aurier is directly responsible for most of the late goals that Jose Mourinho’s side concede.

The former Paris Saint-Germain right-back has been noted for his attacking qualities under Jose Mourinho.

But defensively, the Ivorian can and often has been a major liability for Tottenham.

Just last month, Aurier conceded a cheap penalty in the home defeat by Leicester City and since his arrival in English football three-and-a-half years ago, only Arsenal’s David Luiz is responsible for more spot-kicks being given against his side than the Spurs star.

And speaking to Spurs Web on YouTube, here’s what club legend Roberts has said about the 28-year-old: “Why do people not say to Aurier ‘don’t tackle’? Just stand up. He tries to win every ball, gives silly free-kicks away and I’d say 85 or 90 percent of the goals we concede in the last minutes have come from his mistakes.

“How many penalties does he give away? The one against Leicester….there was no need to do anything. It was just stupidity.”

To be fair, Aurier has gotten a lot better since Mourinho took over from Mauricio Pochettino.

He remains somewhat erratic and can shoot Tottenham in the foot, as has been pointed out, but he also happens to be a much better right-back than Matt Doherty, all things considered.
