Leeds and Newcastle played out an entertaining 2-2 thriller at Elland Road earlier on Saturday in what was a crucial game for both sides.

Sam Allardyce needed all three points to take Leeds out of the relegation zone, whereas Eddie Howe required a win to keep Newcastle in with a shot at qualifying for the Champions League.

Unfortunately, Leeds nor Newcastle got what they wanted as the points were shared, in a match which involved two errors from Maximilian Wober and Joelinton.

What’s the story?

Well, Michael Brown was commentating on the game for BBC Radio 5 Live, where he criticised both players for giving away penalties.

The 46-year-old called Joelinton “stupid” for flying into a challenge on Junior Firpo, which gave Patrick Bamford the chance to double Leeds’ 1-0 advantage from the penalty spot.

In full, he said: “That was huge. It was a stupid challenge by Joelinton.”

Sadly for Leeds, the England international saw his effort from 12 yards saved by Nick Pope, before Newcastle raced up the other end and won a penalty of their own.

It was Wober who gave that spot-kick away for a challenge on Alexander Isak, which Brown went on to label as “silly” on commentary duty.

The BBC Sport pundit said: “It’s so deflating for Leeds. These games can change so quick. Pace frightens defenders and that was silly from Wober. Wilson put so much power on that strike. It was full of conviction.”

Bamford will feel sick at Leeds 2-2 Newcastle

After Bamford missed a sitter late on in the 1-1 draw against Leicester, he would have been determined to put things right against Newcastle.

However, the Leeds No.9 only made things worse, and he will feel sick watching his penalty back.

If the Whites now go on to suffer relegation to the Championship, a number of Leeds fans will point to those two moments from Bamford as season defining incidents.
