Andy Townsend hailed Joe Gomez’s attacking quality as ‘stunning’ during Liverpool’s 7-1 demolition job of Glasgow Rangers in the Champions League on Wednesday night at Ibrox, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+.
Even though Liverpool fell 1-0 behind through a Scott Arfield goal from the edge of the box, a Mo Salah six-minute hat-trick from the bench ripped the Scottish Premiership side to shreds.
Liverpool struck back five minutes after Arfield’s goal in the first half, with Roberto Firmino equalising and the British duo went into the break level.

But that’s when Jurgen Klopp’s side turned it on and just destroyed the Glasgow side, with Firmino putting the away side into the lead following a brilliant cross from Gomez.
Darwin Nunez then put a cushion between the two sides, before Salah came off the bench to score a stunning hat-trick, as Harvey Elliott also joined the party and bagged his first Champions League goal to make it a remarkable seven.
Former Aston Villa and Republic of Ireland defender Townsend reacted to Liverpool’s second goal and the brilliant passage of play from Gomez, who was playing at right-back instead of the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold.
“Roberto Firmino points where he wants it,” said Townsend. “Telling Joe Gomez ‘now, put it in there’ and it’s absolutely timed to perfection with his run.
“It’s a brilliant cross. It’s a stunning ball in from Joe Gomez. All the pace that you need.”

DON’T WRITE OF LIVERPOOL
Well, that was utterly, utterly devastating from Liverpool and a message of intent from the Premier League side.
Whilst a lot has been made of Liverpool’s defence this season, and in truth, it was a poor goal they conceded for Arfield’s opener, but one thing that has still been top-quality, is their attack.
And what will be even better for the fans is that Salah, who was previously being questioned, is now telling everyone that’ form is temporary and class is permanent’.
It’s only a small matter of facing Manchester City at the weekend, but the Merseyside club will now go into that match with a spring in their step.
