Tottenham Hotspur confirmed that another played has signed a contract extension with the club – but to the surprise of many fans, it was Tom Carroll who extended his stay.

Spurs had already secured new contracts for playmaker Christian Eriksen and defensive midfielder Eric Dier this month, whilst the London Evening Standard report that Danny Rose, Dele Alli and Erik Lamela are also in line for new deals.

On Friday, Tottenham made another move on a new contract ahead of this weekend’s clash with Sunderland, and many fans were left stunned when Tom Carroll penned a new contract.

Carroll, 24, joined the Spurs academy back in 2008, with the Watford-born ace coming up through the ranks before making his Premier League debut back in November 2012.

After loan spells with Leyton Orient, Derby County, Queens Park Rangers and Swansea City, Carroll has become a member of Mauricio Pochettino’s first team at White Hart Lane, and made 18 appearances in all competitions last season.

So far this term, Carroll has only featured in one game, and that was as an injury-time substitute against Crystal Palace last month – and yet he’s now extended his deal until 2019.

A diminutive midfielder known for his passing ability, Carroll is far from a first-choice player at White Hart Lane, especially with the likes of Dier, Mousa Dembele, Dele Alli and Victor Wanyama at the club.

As a result, shocked Spurs fans took to Twitter after Carroll’s new deal was confirmed, with many suggesting that he has done little to earn a new contract and isn’t good enough for Tottenham – and some cynics even believe the new deal is only a ploy to get a fee for Carroll in the future.

Whilst some claim that this decision is on par with Pochettino handing the captaincy to Younes Kaboul in 2014, others believe that he does still have something to offer, and they trust the judgement of the Spurs manager in keeping Carroll at the club for the next three years.
