Premier League newcomers Norwich City reportedly wanted to sign Simon Mignolet from Liverpool this summer.

Norwich City’s sporting director Stuart Webber has admitted that he couldn’t help but laugh when he saw that The Canaries had been linked with Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, speaking to the Pink ‘Un.

Webber has made it clear that Norwich want to avoid repeating the mistakes Fulham made last season when they spent obscene sums on a number of big-money additions while relegating their promotion-winning heroes to the bench.

But this did not stop The Mail (19 May, page 55) reporting that Norwich were keen to bring Mignolet to Carrow Road in a deal that was apparently set to cost £15 million.

And while pointing out that the Belgian international is a fine ‘keeper, Webber has made it clear that Norwich will not be paying such hefty sums in the next few weeks and months.

“Simon Mignolet. I have to say that made me laugh. Nothing against him, he is a top keeper, but just the figures,” said Webber, whose transfer market nous also helped Huddersfield seal promotion to the Premier League in 2017.

“That would be the most crazy one I can think of. When I see us linked to keepers for £15m I just smile. Who comes up with this? Why would we do that? It is not right.”

The Mail since reported that Norwich have been priced out of deals for Mignolet as well as Burnley benchwarmer Joe Hart and Southampton’s Alex McCarthy.

Instead, they have turned their attention to HNK Rijeka number one Simon Sluga, who is a much cheaper option.
