New West Ham assistant defended David Moyes’ spell at Sunderland back in April.

Stuart Pearce has returned to West Ham to take up the assistant manager’s role under David Moyes, Talksport report.

Pearce starred at West Ham during his playing career and hopes to help Moyes lift the struggling Hammers up the Premier League table after a poor start to the season.

Moyes is attempting to salvage his managerial career after a nightmare spell at Sunderland last season which saw them relegated.

But he has a backer in the former England under-21 boss, who leaped to Moyes’ defence back in April when asked about the team’s fortunes.

Chronicle Live reported that Pearce attributed Moyes’ failure down to long existing problems at the club.

Pearce said: “It’s the toughest job in football at the moment, in regards to the big clubs.

“Before he went there last summer, they had problems and they have had problems for a number of years.”

Pearce had the opportunity at the time to criticise the job Moyes was doing and will be glad he didn’t do so now.

He has his own experience of working in tough circumstances, with his last job in management as boss of Nottingham Forest during a turbulent spell of ownership.

Both men have a point to prove and that is a good sign for West Ham fans who are searching for reasons to be positive after an underwhelming start to the campaign.
