Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez is still waiting to fund out his budget for the summer transfer window.

Radio pundit Stuart Pearce looks on prior to the Barclays Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United at White Hart Lane on April 10, 2016 in London, England.

Stuart Pearce has told The Debate, which was broadcast on 25th April on Sky Sports, that Newcastle United are one striker away from having a chance at cracking the top six.

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez has suggested that the Magpies need to invest to compete in the upper echelons of the Premier League.

But Pearce feels that Newcastle should spend the bulk of their budget on securing a striker who can score frequently for them.

He said: “[Newcastle need] a striker that’s going to get the 20 goals a year like Shearer or Ferdinand. All of a sudden you can add one or two more to it.

“They’re really good at defending as Rafa is very good at setting his team up, but if you knew they had a striker who could get 20 goals I think they would get really close to the top six.”

Stuart Pearce looks on during the FA Youth Cup Final First Leg match between Manchester City and Chelsea at the Academy Stadium on April 22, 2016 in Manchester, England.

Newcastle are on the look out for a new number nine this summer, but Benitez seems to have his sights set on securing the services of Salomon Rondon.

Rondon has impressed since joining Newcastle on loan from West Bromwich Albion, but he has never scored 20 goals in a Premier League season before.

Rondon doesn’t appear to have the capabilities to be a genuine goalscorer, with his strengths lying in other areas.

Benitez is still waiting to find out about what sort of budget he will have to spend at Newcastle in the summer, if he opts to extend his contract and stay.
