Stuart Pearce believes only new Nottingham Forest manager Martin O’Neill will know whether he wants Roy Keane as his assistant at the club.

The Forest legend asked the following three questions regarding Keane’s potential arrival at the City Ground after the duo worked with each other during their recent stint at the Republic of Ireland.

“That would be a decision based solely on what Martin wants,” Pearce told Sky Sports’ The Debate show on 15/01/2019 at 10:40 pm. Did the relationship [at Ireland] work well? Does Roy offer value and support to Martin? Only Martin knows that.

“Is Roy looking for a manager’s job eventually? Roy knows the club inside out and he’d relish the opportunity to work with Martin again.”

Forest announced on their official website on Tuesday that their two-time European Cup winning player has replaced the recently departed Aitor Karanka in the hot seat.

O’Neill left his role with the Irish national side in November, where Keane was his assistant, but the duo were dismissed after they failed to guide them to last summer’s World Cup in Russia and performances didn’t improve thereafter.

It was the first time O’Neill had worked with Keane on a management level as it remains to be seen whether he will follow him to the Championship side.

O’Neill has not managed on a club level since his Sunderland days, but previously before that, he had great success at Aston Villa, Celtic and Leicester City.

He is now tasked with guiding a Forest team that has not tasted top-flight football this century to the Premier League as they are currently four points outside of the playoff places.

Forest, who were beaten by relegation-threatened Reading last time out, will host in-form Bristol City at the weekend as O’Neill looks to get the first win under his belt.
