The new Forest boss believes Cohen has ‘everything you want’ in a captain.

Chris Cohen will be Nottingham Forest club captain next season, new manager Stuart Pearce confirmed.

The 27-year-old, who joined the Reds in 2007 and has made 257 appearances for the club, is back in training after a knee injury he sustained in November ended his season.

Pearce, who took over as Forest boss on July 1, believes Cohen has ‘everything you want’ in a captain.

“I have met him as a man. He has been out on the training pitch, only on a running basis, not contact,” Pearce said.”

“But I have been impressed by what I heard about him before I came to the club and also since I have spoken to him.

“In the way he conducts himself, he is everything you want in a captain. I have been very impressed with him.”

Cohen has spent much of his time at Forest playing in midfield, but has also been employed as a left-back. Pearce did not give any hints as to what position Cohen would play next season, but did shed some light on his role as club captain.

“I will feedback off him about the dressing room,” Pearce said. “He will be told that, if we are going to be successful, that (success) has to come from the dressing room. It cannot be from me all the time.”

As a former Forest and England captain, Pearce says he views the role of captain as hugely important to the success of a team.

“I have captained every team I have played for since I was a kid so I hold a lot of importance in that (role),” he said.

“The greatest honour I ever achieved in football was captaining England.

“So being my captain holds a lot of importance in my eyes and I hope it does in whoever captains the team I am in charge of, without a doubt.”
