Stuart Pearce rates Tottenham’s Harry Winks – but isn’t overly impressed by his England call-up.

Stuart Pearce has told Sky Sports that he thinks Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Winks is a ‘great talent’ – but his England call-up has shown a ‘flaw in the process’.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has helped a number of young players earn England call-ups, with the likes of Eric Dier, Dele Alli and Harry Kane all becoming key players for England since working with Pochettino.

Now, Spurs have seen another youngster earn an England call-up, as Harry Winks has been brought into Gareth Southgate’s squad as a replacement for the injured Fabian Delph.

Winks, 21, emerged into the Tottenham first team last season, and with both Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele out injured, he has been starting recently for Tottenham in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

Winks looks to be a star of the future, possessing superb passing and vision, as well as composure on the ball for such a young midfielder, and he should be vital for club and country in the coming years.

However, Winks’ call-up hasn’t gone down well with everybody, given that he has only ever made four Premier League starts for Tottenham, and only has two caps for the England Under-21’s – yet finds himself in the senior squad.

Now, pundit Stuart Pearce has told Sky Sports that he thinks the call-up is brilliant for Winks, as he is a great talent, but with so few starts for Spurs, he feels that Winks emergence into the England squad shows a major flaw in the process.

“Harry Winks has only started a handful of games for his club, and he’s in the international fold,” said Pearce. “Now, it’s brilliant for him, I think he’s a great talent, but it shows you the flaws in the process,” he added.

Pearce’s comments are in reference to English players at top clubs being immediately catapulted into the England squad despite a lack of first-team football, given that when he was an England international, everybody was a starter – but anybody who has seen Winks in action will know just how talented he is, and there aren’t many other options who would be around the England squad for the long-term like Winks will.
