Aston Villa have won just one of their first eight Championship matches.

Stuart Pearce has told Sky Sports News, which was broadcast on 19th September, that Aston Villa may not hit top gear until Christmas time.

Villa were tipped to be one of the favourites for promotion this season, but they have started the new campaign in disappointing fashion.

Despite a big investment over the summer, Villa have won just once in their first eight matches.

And Pearce said: “They have a squad which are only used to playing in the Premier League. I think it may take them until Christmas to get some momentum going into their play.

“A lot of work needs to be done at the club after last year. They have a good management and coaching set up there, but it will take them a few games to get going.”

Villa have shown some signs of promise within matches, but they are struggling to get over the line.

Roberto Di Matteo’s side have thrown away nine points from winning positions, and it has put the pressure on the Italian boss already.

The Claret and Blues drew their last match 0-0 with Ipswich Town, and they are now playing catch up with the promotion chasing pack.

Villa’s next league match comes against high flying Newcastle United at the weekend.
