Wolverhampton Wanderers have one foot in the Premier League but supporters find themselves defending their impending promotion rather than celebrating it.
Wolverhampton Wanderers have one foot back in the big time after re-establishing an eight point lead at the top of the Championship with five games to go.
Nuno Espirito Santo‘s Wolves side have been entertaining all season and despite a brief blip they have recovered and restored their healthy gap above the dogfight to join them in the top flight.
But rather than enjoy their impending promotion, Wolves fans instead find themselves fighting off claims of unfairness, inequality and effectively cheating since it became clear they were going to hold on to at least one of the two automatic spots.
But it is that spending power which has seen many predict Wolves will go big to make a splash on their Premier League return.
And former Premier League greats Stuart Pearce and Ray Parlour were in agreement on Sky Sports’ The Debate that Wolves will do more than just stay up.
“I think they’ll take heart from the three promoted teams this year that have put a lot of pressure on the Premier League because none of them have been in the bottom three in the main,” Pearce said on The Debate.
“I think Wolves are well-equipped to come in and have a right good tilt and when I say that I mean adding to their squad and finishing maybe in the top half of the Premier League.”
“I think the agent Mendes is going to play a very important role next season as well and I’m sure they’ll be plotting behind the scenes now, who will be coming in next season,” Parlour added.
“You can see the quality they’ve got already but they can add to that as well (and) I could see them being midtable and I think it will be an excellent season.
“You always say with the promoted teams if they can stay up first season it’s a brilliant season but I can see Wolves really kicking on now.
“I’m really pleased they’re back in the Premier League because they’ve always been a great club.”
