Scunthorpe United manager Stuart McCall has explained to the club’s official website why he signed Tom Pearce from Leeds United in the January transfer window.

As announced on Leeds’s official website on January transfer deadline day, Pearce has joined League One side Scunthorpe United on loan until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old, who can operate as a left-back or as a left wing-back, will be looking to establish himself in the first team at Scunthorpe in the coming weeks and months.

McCall has explained Scunthorpe’s decision to bring the youngster on loan to Glanford Park.

“We’re delighted to get Tom,” McCall told Scunthorpe’s official website about Pearce. “He’s one we’ve had an eye on and we know a lot about him. He has a good pedigree.

“CBJ could be out for two months and Butty has been out for seven or eight weeks, and is struggling with a little spasm in his back at the moment as well.

“Although we have lads who can fill in there, we felt we needed a natural left-back or left wing-back, where Tom can play as well.”

Chances at Scunthorpe United

Pearce has yet to establish himself in the Leeds first team, but the youngster will get the chance to play regularly for Scunthorpe.

The youngster could even make his debut this afternoon, with the Iron taking on Barnsley away from home in League One.

Scunthorpe are 14th in the league table at the moment with 37 points from 30 matches.
