Armstrong has left Celtic to join English Premier League side Southampton.
Stuart Armstrong has sent a heartfelt Instagram message to Celtic fans after he agreed to join English Premier League side Southampton on Tuesday evening on a four-year deal.
The Scotland international joined Mark Hughes’ side this week after long being linked with a move to the top tier of English football following his excellent form for the Hoops during thew 2016-17 campaign.
He scored 17 goals from midfield in Brendan Rodgers’ first season in charge, helping Celtic go unbeaten in the league and winning the treble. Though Celtic won the treble in 2017-18, Armstrong failed to replicate his form.
But with a year left on his Hoops contract, Mark Hughes’ Saints have decided to spend £8million to sign the former Dundee United star this summer. Armstrong posted on Instagram, stating that he will “miss” Celtic.
Armstrong failed to make quite the same impact during 2016-17, mainly due to the improved form of Callum McGregor as well as the signing of Olivier Ntcham from Manchester City last summer, who has thrived in Scottish football.
The versatile star will now be tasked with helping keep the Saints in the top tier of English football next term, after Hughes pulled off a miraculous escape from the drop towards the end of last season.
Southampton are renowned for recruiting from Celtic, signing Virgil van Dijk, Victor Wanyama and Fraser Forster in recent years from the Scottish champions.
