Back in June, Georginio Wijnaldum ended his five-year stay at Liverpool and joined Paris Saint-Germain, after his contract expired at Anfield.
The Reds decided not to extend the Dutchman’s deal, and their decision is currently being justified as the 30-year-old struggles in Paris.
What’s the story?
Well, that is not just our opinion, but also the thoughts of RMC Sport.
The popular French news outlet have criticised Wijnaldum after his start to life under Mauricio Pochettino at the Parc des Princes.
RMC Sport write that Wijnaldum is ‘struggling’ to make his mark at PSG, while he also looks ‘less sharp’ than he did at Liverpool.
Additionally, RMC Sport describe him as looking ‘a bit lost’ in the French capital, a significant change to how he was viewed on Merseyside.
Why has Gini Wijnaldum struggled since leaving Liverpool?
In our view, Wijnaldum is suffering from being part of an individualistic set-up under Pochettino, as opposed to a unit under Jürgen Klopp.
At PSG, the likes of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi can basically do whatever they want – they certainly aren’t as functional as Klopp’s gegenpressing style.
We believe Wijnaldum is suffering from that.
The 30-year-old – who earns £165,000-a-week – needs to be a cog in a system, as he can be exposed as an individual.
Clearly, Pochettino hasn’t quite figured out how to use Wijnaldum yet, although things are starting to brighten up, at least.
After scoring two goals against RB Leipzig in the Champions League, Wijnaldum also grabbed an assist in a 3-2 win over Bordeaux.
Hopefully, the Netherlands international can use that as a springboard to kickstart his career at PSG.
