Speaking on the Overlap, Harry Kane has been discussing the best defenders he’s ever played against, and inevitably, he’s mentioned Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk.

Harry Kane’s tell-all interview with Gary Neville was about more than just his potential move away from Tottenham as the pair also focused on his playing career to this point.

Kane spoke about the hardest defender he’s ever played against, and he said van Dijk is right up there with John Terry in terms of the greatest he’s ever faced.

“Early on in my career, John Terry. I’ve played against him a few times and he was so switched on with his positioning and when you’d try to take him on he’d always get his body across and make it difficult, so he was a really smart defender.” Kane said.

“I mean, van Dijk now at Liverpool is a great defender. He’s big, strong, fast. I never try to go away from a defender, but in my game now I drop deep and try to get on the ball in different ways. I’m not going to run in behind van Dijk, but I can try to pull him out of position and maybe utilise it that way.”

Kane is spot on about van Dijk.

The Dutchman has a scary combination of pace, strength and technical ability and for that reason he’s almost impossible to beat.

You can’t run past him, you can’t dribble around him and you can’t beat him in the air.

The Liverpool star has of course been out for the majority of this season with injury, and we can only hope that he returns to his best sooner rather than later.
