Okay so let’s acknowledge that Arsenal had a brilliant summer transfer window last time around.
Arsenal spent more than any other club in Europe but they managed to make additions which have transformed the squad.
Spending £80 million on Aaron Ramsdale and Ben White was met with many raised eyebrows but, you have to say, they have been outstanding acquisitions by the Gunners.
And then there’s Takehiro Tomiyasu, who joined for another £20 million from Bologna in Italy.
Finishing in the Champions League places is in Arsenal’s hands now as a result of their spending last summer.
But Edu and Mikel Arteta did make a mistake by not signing one player: Tammy Abraham.

Arsenal’s best striker is Alexandre Lacazette and he’s only managed three Premier League goals this season.
If Arteta’s outfit miss out on Champions League qualification, it’ll be a reflection on the lack of goals and, well, Abraham is finding the net at a frightening rate over in Italy.
The former Chelsea hitman signed for Roma last summer after it was reported that the Gunners were also interested.
In fact, the 24-year-old striker actually wanted to move to the Emirates Stadium [The Athletic], which gave the North Londoners a massive advantage that they evidently didn’t want.
Having netted 19 goals across all competitions [Transfermarkt], Abraham is Europe’s most prolific English player this season, even moreso than a certain Harry Kane.
No English footballer has scored more than the England international this season.
And if Arsenal do fail to finish in the Premier League’s top four, well questions might be asked of Edu and Arteta despite the success of the players they did sign last summer.
