West Ham United and Sunderland should consider a swap deal involving Jermain Defoe and Diafra Sakho.
West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic
Hammers boss Slaven Bilic will be looking to bring some genuine quality into the club this summer, as the Croatian looks to learn from the mistakes he made last year, with an incredibly poor player recruitment drive eventually proving to be detrimental to their Premier League campaign.
One area where Bilic must strengthen is his forward department, and the signing of Black Cats striker Jermain Defoe would be a huge boost for West Ham, as they head into the 2017/18 Premier League campaign.
The East London outfit have been endlessly linked with a swoop for their former player, but the problem for Bilic and co is that the list of potential suitors for the 34-year-old England international is a lengthy one to say the least.
Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe
They could, however, steal a march in the race to sign Defoe by offering Sunderland Diafra Sakho in return. A potential stumbling block, of course, will be in convincing the Senegal striker to swap the Premier League for the Championship, but it is obvious that the Hammers boss deems him surplus to requirements at the London Stadium, after he tried to move him on last summer.
And if he was offered the guarantee of regular first team football at the Stadium of Light, it might just be enough to tempt Sakho into a switch to Wearside.
Diafra Sakho
And once that bridge is crossed, West Ham would surely have no trouble in convincing Defoe to return to his former club.
The experienced hitman was sensational for Sunderland this season, scoring 15 goals in 37 Premier League appearances. What makes that record all the more impressive is the fact that he played in one of the worst ever teams to grace England’s top flight.
His potential arrival in East London could see him strike up a formidable partnership with Andy Carroll, and the pair’s contrasting attributes would surely compliment each other perfectly.
And with the opening of the transfer window just around the corner, neither club should hesitate in getting this deal done.
