When Cologne beat Celtic to the signing of Union Berlin striker Sebastian Andersson in the summer of 2020 – paying £5 million for the privilege – it’s unlikely they were expecting to let the Sweden international go for next to nothing just two years and eight goals later.

But, according to BILD, Andersson is now a completed medical away from being unveiled as Brondby’s new number nine.

What’s more, the Danish giants are forking over just £1 million. A dramatically reduced price-tag which sums up just how badly things went for Andersson in the Cathedral City.

One-time Celtic target Sebastian Andersson on the move again

Was the late-blooming Andersson simply a classic ‘one season wonder’ at Union Berlin? His 12 goals in the 2019/20 Bundesliga season a flash in the proverbial pan?

Did Celtic dodge a bullet when Andersson put pen to paper with Cologne, after attracting admiring glances from the green side of Glasgow (Kicker)?

Well, as ever, context is required. Things are seldom black-and-white in football and Andersson’s Cologne career is shrouded in a blanket of grey.

In fact, he even scored one and set up another on a dream debut for the Billy Goats at the start of 2020/21. But then the injury curse struck, a serious knee problem keeping Andersson out of action until April.

When he returned, he had one of the Bundesliga’s most ruthless marksmen to overhaul. An impossible task, as a revitalised Anthony Modeste ended last season with 20 goals to his name. A tally only bettered by Robert Lewandowski, Patrik Schick and Erling Haaland.

“It is a super good purchase (for Brondby) if he succeeds,” former Denmark international Per Frimann tells TV3. “He is just the player they need.

“There has been a lot of talk about Brondby getting a lot of positions into the box without getting enough out of (those opportunities). Andersson is good with the head, good in his link-play and good from set pieces.

“He fits well in there.”
