Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool fans, as well as the players, will be waking up on Sunday morning with very different emotions.

From Luis Diaz to Son Heung-min, some will be frustrated to the highest order at what unfolded at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, whilst others will have the biggest smile on their faces.

How many controversial moments can you cram into one game? Well, Simon Hooper and the VAR team for Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Spurs tried to make as many headlines as possible.

The first big talking point was Curtis Jones’ straight red in the first half, which Tim Sherwood thinks was ‘harsh, but fair’ and it left the officials ‘no option’ but to send him off, as he told beIN SPORTS.

Then there was the biggest of talking points. Luis Diaz’s goal, when the scores were still 0-0, and how it was ruled for ‘offside’ when replays actually showed that he was kept on my Micky van de Ven’s foot.

That moment left ex-Spurs boss Tim Sherwood baffled as he labelled it ‘strange’, even though, from the ‘naked eye’, he could see that the Colombian star was onside.

VAR calls during Liverpool’s defeat to Tottenham

“I think so (harsh but fair red card),” said Sherwood. “Once they slow it down, freeze it, go across to VAR and have a look, then I think they have no option but to give a red card.”

On Luis Diaz’s ‘offside’ goal: “It was a little bit strange. The play had continued. It was still a minute after, straight on the scoreboard that they were checking for offside.

“But we started to play again and the check was already complete, I felt. But, to the naked eye, it looked like van de Ven’s leg was playing him onside. But they must have checked it.”

Liverpool will challenge for the Premier League title

What will hurt Liverpool fans is that they have shown early signs that they can challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title.

After all, they were the last ones to dethrone the Treble-winners.

But after Pep Guardiola watched Manchester City suffer a defeat at Wolves, then three points against Spurs would have sent the Merseyside giants top.

Yet, whilst they can accept defeat, no-one will accept it in the manner in which Liverpool did.
