Speaking on The Big Interview with Graham Hunter, Brad Friedel has been discussing Newcastle United’s current position.
Friedel spoke about all things football with Hunter, including his desire to become a Sporting Director.
Hunter, somewhat jokingly, put it to Friedel that Newcastle are still without a Sporting Director, and the American, in turn, gave his view on the situation at St James’ Park.
What’s been said?
Hunter asked Friedel about the role at Newcastle, and the former goalkeeper responded with an interesting take on the Magpies’ current position.
“I wish I had that box to open for you and I hope to see it soon, but it does occur to me that Newcastle don’t have one of those yet?” Hunter said.
“It was a strange purchase, well, it’s not a strange purchase, Newcastle aren’t a strange purchase, but the position they’re in is strange. They could be the richest club in the world and playing in the Championship. The January window is hard to get your players in, it’s not easy and they might find themselves six or eight points adrift before they get themselves in and I don’t know, just because they have money doesn’t mean it’s a foregone conclusion to stay in the league,” Friedel said.

Tough sell
Friedel didn’t comment on Hunter’s suggestion that he would go to Newcastle as their Sporting Director, but his comments may explain why the Magpies haven’t got someone in place yet.
Yes, United are now one of the richest clubs in the world, but they’re at the bottom of the league and the January window is notoriously difficult to work in.
For anyone, taking that Sporting Director role right now would be a massive risk, because if you get January wrong and Newcastle go down, you’ll be forever known as the man who relegated the richest club on the planet.
