Everton fans have taken to Twitter to react after Rafa Benitez said Everton ran further than Liverpool in their 4-1 Merseyside derby defeat.

What’s the story?

Well, you can understand why this has annoyed the Everton supporters.

As quoted by the Liverpool Echo, Benitez said: “We are really disappointed with things. We ran more than Liverpool in every single department but conceded four goals. They punished our mistakes and it is something that we are already analysing.”

Last time we checked, football games are won with goals rather than distance covered.

Yes, the Toffees did run more than the Reds, but they need to start working smarter, not just harder than the opposition.

Everton spent most of Wednesday evening chasing shadows, as Jürgen Klopp’s Reds humiliated them at Goodison Park.

It’s good to hear that Everton’s fitness levels are up to standard, but they must do more than aimless chasing.

With a group of players clearly willing to run, Benitez should think about coaching an organised pressing system, like Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds.

Rafa Benitez must be careful at Everton

Benitez is on thin ice with the Everton supporters right now.

The Toffees haven’t won a game in eight outings, and the Spaniard is already quite unpopular due to his association with Liverpool.

Therefore, he must be careful with what he says in these press conferences.

Comments like this – which are quite insulting to the supporters, in truth – are only going to make the fans angrier at the situation.

Benitez would be better served saying it how it is, and levelling with what is a knowledgable, passionate fanbase who are certainly no mugs.

For now, let’s see what they’ve been saying about his comments…
