England vs USA may well go down as one of the worst games in World Cup history, but there were a couple of decent performances on Friday evening.
Unfortunately, none of the standout showings were from England players, but the US team could, by-and-large, be very proud of their showings.
One man who was lauded in the national press after the game was Matt Turner who earned an 8/10 rating from Sporting News for his showing between the sticks.

Turners scores 8/10
Sporting News were very complimentary of the Arsenal goalkeeper.
“Matt Turner wasn’t needed much, with England struggling to produce quality chances, only making two saves. However, one of those saves was excellent, stopping a vicious Mason Mount effort just before the halftime break. While the volume wasn’t there, Turner was on point when called upon,” They wrote.
“However, where Turner really stood out was his distribution. He was spectacular springing counter-attacks, with a few that stood out as memorable moments. He often found Christian Pulisic deep over the halfway line with his long kicks, while he moved at a quick and precise pace getting out of the back.
“Finally, Turner pulled out his inner Manuel Neuer as he audaciously dribbled through two England defenders out of his own penalty area in stoppage time, in what was a totally bonkers moment that he got away with. Great game for Turner overall.”
Wasn’t tested
It’s hard to agree with an 8/10 rating for Turner in a game where he barely had to make a single save.
England were turgid going forward, and, in all honesty, Turner was barely noticeable in the American goal.
He didn’t put a foot wrong, but as a goalkeeper you have to be making saves if you’re going to be lauded after a match.
Turner was absolutely fine, but he probably wasn’t worthy of such a high match rating here.
